Layering Products: When To Apply Sunscreen?Posted on 19/10/2020
We all know the importance of a good sunscreen, especially because it protects your skin from skin cancer and sunburns! Sunscreen also prevents hyperpigmentation (dark spots) from darkening and keeps your overall skin tone youthful-looking and devoid of wrinkles.
I never used to wear sunscreen because I believed most sunscreens would break me out even more. My skin is fairly oily and acne prone but upon realising the significance of sunscreen later in my adult years, I had to take the risk of trial and error with different ingredients for longer periods. I had to be patient and figure out what’s best for me. The result? Sunscreen makes a huge difference in my beauty routine so thank goodness I saw the value of sunscreen before it was too late (I’ll save ‘the best ingredients of an SPF’ for another blog)! But as someone who also likes to wear makeup, I had so many questions: how exactly do I go about layering sunscreen with makeup? Should I wear it underneath or on top? Or can I do both? What kind of texture do I want my sunscreen to be? A lotion? Spray? Mineral powder? There’s so many on the market.
So many questions, I know! So here are my answers summarised as much as possible.
1. When do I use sunscreen in my routine?
The general rule is always try to apply sunscreen after moisturising and before makeup at least 20 minutes before heading out. This gives your skin enough time to absorb the protective qualities of your sunscreen. (This can change depending on the texture of your SPF, go to question 3 for further clarification).
2. Does layering an SPF mean added protection?
While the layering of different sunscreen products won’t increase the total SPF rating upwards (So an SPF 30 sunscreen lotion + SPF 15 foundation won’t equal to SPF 45), the layering of SPF products does strengthen your total protection as technically, you are ensuring that you cover more surface area without leaving any missing exposed gaps or spots. Also, re-applying and layering sunscreen products after 2+ hours helps cover areas where your sunscreen had already broken down earlier.
3. How to Layer Sunscreens
Depending on the texture, layering sunscreens can be fairly easily because there aren’t any strict rules. It really comes down to what you like for your skin. Just ensure you are applying generously all over your face and NECK! Don’t forget your neck (I often neglect it without realising).
I love a good sunscreen foundation lotion with an SPF of 30 or above after my skincare routine. Since I have fairly oily skin though, I also like mattify my complexion with another mineral powder with SPF.
As well as SPF powders, there are SPF sprays that you can apply on top of your makeup (almost like a mist), but often powder and sprays aren’t as effective as lotions as it’s nearly impossible to figure out if you’ve applied enough. Half the time, I think most of my product from my sunscreen spray gets lost in the wind and in my eye! My recommendation is use these powders and sprays as AN ADDED BONUS; a second layer of protection, a means of insurance NOT as the first mode of defence.
There are also primers with sunscreen, eye creams with sunscreen and moisturisers with a great SPF. These are wonderful to incorporate in your everyday beauty routine. Just don’t mix your own moisturiser with your sunscreen because your own concoctions aren’t controlled ingredients, and might deplete the effectiveness of either of your products so be careful!
