Korean Skin Care Routine For WinterPosted on 09/05/2018
External environmental factors majorly affect your skin condition. In Sydney, whilst the days are still warm and sunny, the early mornings and late nights are definitely getting colder. The transition into Winter is coming, and my skin is the first to feel it. My skin (face & body) feels more tight and dry, my lips more chapped and my current skin care routine just doesn’t seem to provide enough hydration anymore. Winter brings icy winds and low humidity which strip moisture from your skin, making it dry and flaky. This then causes redness, excess dead skin cells, clogged pores and more acne (for any skin type). You may not need to change your entire routine but now’s the time to be proactive and make some adjustments for this seasonal change. To help with this transition, we’ve put together some useful tips and recommendations for a Korean skin care routine for winter.
1. Oil Cleanser
Oil cleansers are absolutely amazing, for any skin type – yes, for oily skin too! Honestly, I think everyone should be using an oil cleanser daily, especially in their night time routine. Oil cleansers are gentle and they remove sunscreen, dirt and stubborn makeup. Compared to most makeup wipes that can be quite harsh and often don’t remove all makeup traces, oil cleansers are a much better option for makeup removal. Using an oil cleanser daily will help to keep your pores clean, reduce blackheads and keep your skin moisturised.
For those with combination or oily skin, even if you usually use a gentle, hydrating foam or gel cleanser, sometimes when the weather is colder these cleansers can start to make your skin feel slightly dry. Whilst they’re great in warmer months, we highly recommend you make the switch to an oil cleanser, or start double cleansing (oil cleanser first, gel / foam cleanser second) if you don’t do this already!

2. Gentle Exfoliators
Dry, flaky skin means more dead skin cells, therefore exfoliating is still essential however, try using a gentle exfoliator (if you don’t already). Drier skin means more delicate skin so change to a physical exfoliator with finer granules like the Skinfood Rice Mask, or give a chemical exfoliator a go.

Exfoliating the excess dead skin cells during the colder seasons will also allow for better absorption of the rest of your skin care routine. This is important in winter as your skin will need to drink up as much hydration and nutrients as possible.
3. Hydrate, and then Hydrate some more!
A Korean skin care routine for Winter should also involve Toners, Mists, Essences, Serums, Ampoules!
Hydration is essential for all skin types, especially oily / acne prone skin. Winter can cause more acne due to skin being more dry and dehydrated. Keeping your skin’s water and oil levels balanced will control oil production, reduce acne and any wrinkles or fine lines will become less visible! Some useful tips:
- Layering. Layer on hydrating skin care products to create a moisture barrier on your skin and protect it. Apply the products from thinnest consistency to thickest (order: Toner, Essence, Serum and Ampoule).
If your current toner doesn’t provide enough hydration for your skin in colder weather, the Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner is a rich but quick absorbing toner that prolongs hydration 20% more than most other toners. Lightweight toners such as the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner are well suited for oily, acne prone skin types all year round.
- 7 Skin Method. Those with dry skin may find this latest Korean beauty method useful in winter. It requires you to layer on a lightweight toner or watery essence up to 7 times in a row. You don’t need to do the whole 7 layers; once you feel like your skin has enough hydration, you can move onto a treatment serum/ampoule or straight to a sheet mask or moisturiser to seal it all in.

- Moisturising Ingredients. Look for products that contain long lasting moisturising ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Propolis, Ceramide or Glycerin. These ingredients increase the water content in your skin and lock in moisture.
- Drink! If you find it hard to drink a lot of water daily, Green Tea is a great alternative. It keeps you warm, hydrated and delivers antioxidants to your skin.
4. Treat Your Skin
Skin needs extra TLC in winter. A simple way to nurture your skin more is by sheet masking. Take 10-15 minutes to relax and indulge your skin with nutrients to give it a hydration & vitality boost. It’ll also create a smooth base for makeup application! Already sheet mask? Try doing it a little more than usual during the cold season (unless you do this daily, then keep it up!).
Oil treatments are a godsend for winter, and those with oily skin should not shy away from this either. Since the low humidity strips moisture, replenishing your oil levels is also needed. Apply a facial oil or serum/ampoule that contains good oils in it, or an oil sheet mask a couple of times a week.
If oil treatments still aren’t for you then lather on a sleeping mask a few times a week before bedtime. 5. SPF Always

So protect your skin with sunscreen always, every time you step out that door, and don’t forget to reapply if you’re out all day. 6. Don’t Neglect Your Eyes, Lips & Feet
Last but not least your Korean skin care routine for winter should also include taking care of the delicate skin around your eyes, lips & your feet!
Dry skin around your eyes will increase wrinkles and dark, sunken under eye circles. Incorporate an eye cream into your skin care routine particularly for winter to also avoid the dull & tired look. A useful tip for when you apply your eye cream is to use your ring fingers to gently pat in the product and then massage your under eye and eye lid.
