The Korean Double Cleansing MethodPosted on 29/06/2018

The Korean Beauty Culture has again shared with the world a skincare method called “double cleansing” to help you achieve clear and beautiful skin.
What is “double cleansing”?
Often when we remove the impurities, makeup, dirt and oils from our skin, we don’t always get it all off. So, here’s how double cleansing is the way to go. It is the first face cleansing step in your beauty routine. Like its name, it’s just a cleansing skincare method that involves you washing your face twice with two different cleansers – an oil based and a water-based cleanser.
Why do we need cleansers?
According to the science experts, cleansing once is definitely not enough and this includes a quick wash of your face to clean your skin. Partha Mukhopadhyay states that “many environmental impurities and cosmetic products are not water soluble and washing the skin with simple water would not be sufficient to remove them.” And this is where cleansers come into play. Cleansers, similar that of soaps, detergents and emulsifiers, have the capability to disrupt and lower the surface tension of most substances that build up on your skin and remove it. But dependent on the types of cleansers you are using, double cleansing ensures that you remove absolutely everything, leaving no traces of residual makeup or unwanted nasties!
Double Cleansing is the essential step in your skincare routine that helps you to thoroughly clean your skin, while also preparing your skin for your skincare routine. Throughout the day, your face is a magnet for accumulated impurities, pollutants, dirt and oils which contribute to potential breakouts, an uneven complexion, sebum build-up, pigmentation and ageing. One of the easiest ways to prevent these problematic skin concerns is to just be diligent with your cleansing.
*water soluble: able to be broken down or dissolved in water.
When do we double cleanse?
There’s absolutely no wrong time to double cleanse. However, it is definitely recommended to double cleanse at the end of the day. It is part of the 10-step skincare routine right before applying toner and other skincare products. Even if you don’t wear makeup frequently or haven’t left the house, it is still important to give your skin a good clean.
What are the advantages of double cleansing?
Double cleansing has been proven to be one of the easiest ways to keep your skin clean. But there are other benefits as well. These include:
- By constantly removing the layers of bacteria, pollutants, impurities and unwanted substances for your skin, your skin will be brighter, healthier and fresher for longer.
- Some cleansers have additional skincare benefits that help to enhance your skincare experience and improve the appearance of your skin (given that you were religiously double cleansing).
- It allows your skincare products to work more effectively and get your money’s worth out of the products.
- Double cleansing reduces the appearances of pores, pimples and sebum build up. It also improves wrinkles, sunspots and uneven skin.
- Because you are using both an oil-based and water-based cleanser, you are 95% certain to remove all skin of substances whether it is or isn’t water soluble.

How does double cleansing work?
There are just two extremely simple steps that you need to know:
Step 1. Oil-based Cleanser
This first step is essentially using an oil cleanser to remove the first layer of your skin which might have makeup or oil build up. Everyone should be using an oil-based cleanser as it is one of the easiest and gentlest ways to break down makeup and remove impurities while also leaving the natural oils on your skin.

Yes, micellar water or makeup remover also does this, but it doesn’t have the same skincare benefits as an oil cleanser. Most of the time, these strip your skin of moisture while also irritating your skin with the friction of the cotton pad needed to use with the product. This in turn over-dries your skin and you would have to work harder to replenish, rehydrate and repair the skin.
Depending on the size of your face, you would only need 1-2 pumps to get the job done. You must apply the oil cleanser with dry hands onto a dry face. Massage the product thoroughly in circular motions around your skin with the pressures of your fingers. Once you have done so, use lukewarm water to rinse off the product.
Step 2. Water-based Cleanser
Now that you have broken down all the heavy-duty impurities off your skin, there may still be some residual nasties, including sebum, that may be stuck in your pores. So, this is where the water cleanse comes into effect and it is done with a water-based cleanser. This will guarantee that you have taken off every last trace of unwanted substances from your skin.
Most water-based cleansers do have an element of humectants that also add hydration and moisture into your skin while also cleansing. This is particularly beneficial for achieving “glass-like” skin.
To use a water-based cleanser, generally you must apply the product on wet or damp skin. You would need about a 10-cent to a 20-cent sized amount and again working the product on your skin in circular motions for about 1-2 minutes. Once this is done, rinse the product off with lukewarm water.

Is double cleansing for everybody?
To put it simply, yes. This Korean double cleansing method works for most skin types. However, double cleansing for certain drier skin types, such as those with eczema, rosacea and some sensitive skins, might run the risk of over-drying their skin. It is very important to always seek your dermatologist for the best course of action in terms of knowing what your skin type is and what you can and cannot do.
Double Cleansing is a facial skincare step that everyone needs to get onboard with. This method was developed by Korean skincare experts who coined the idea to cleanse the face with two different cleansers to efficiently maximise the removal of unwanted substances on our faces. Because our face attracts both water soluble and non-water-soluble substances that we don’t want on our skin, double cleansing helps to remove them all leaving your skin feeling cleaner, fresher and healthier. And the amazing thing about double cleansing is that it’s super easy to do with just two easy steps!
